About International Passport

These are documents issued by the government to identify persons. They are used to verify a person and their citizenship to promote the movement of people from different countries. Hence, international passports are a useful document in the immigration process. Usually, visa stamps or stickers are placed on the passport to permit a person to enter a country.

Cost of an International Passport in Nigeria

The cost of a Nigerian international passport varies depending on the booklet type and the applicant’s age. According to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the international passport fees are as follows:

32 pages passport booklet

  • A minor (0 to 17 years old) – N8,750
  • An adult (18 to 59 years old) -N 15,000
  • Senior (60 and above) – N 8,750

64 pages passport booklet

  • A minor (0 to 17 years old) – N20,000
  • An adult (18 to 59 years old) – N20,000
  • Senior (60 and above) – N20,000

Bear in mind that these prices may be changed at any time, so it is better to keep checking the website for any changes. Also, depending on your location, you may pay as high as N70,000 for a 64-page passport with a 10-year validity, N35,000 for a 64-page passport with a 5-year validity and N25,000 for a 32-page passport with a 5-year validity.

Nigerian International Passport Application Requirements

To get your international passport, you need to get some documents depending on whether it is a standard passport or an official passport.

For a Standard passport, you must get:

  • Proof of identity from your local government.
  • Proof of age or birth certificate.
  • At least two passport-sized colour photos taken within the last two months.
  • An oath taken by a guarantor in the presence of a commissioner of oaths, a Magistrate, or a High Court Judge.
  • Minors must have a signed letter of permission from their parents.
  • Marriage certificate, if relevant.
  • A police report peradventure your passport was lost or stolen.

For an Official passport, you need to get the following:

  • You need a letter of introduction from the State Government, Federal Government Ministry/Organisation.
  • Marriage certificate, if relevant.
  • A police report peradventure your passport was lost or stolen.
  • A copy of your employment letter or letter of promotion from your last or latest employer.

Nigerian International Passport Application Guide

You need to first apply for an international passport online through the Nigerian Immigration Services. You should follow the steps below:

  • Go to the home page of the portal.
  • Click on the right application and begin.
  • Select the type of passport you want to apply for, whether a Standard e-Passport or an Official e-Passport.
  • Select Start Application.
  • Select the country where you want your passport to be processed i.e where you would pick the passport.
  • Start filling out the application. You would be requested to check the box that states “I ACCEPT FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS FORM,” and click on “PRINT” to print out the application.
  • You would then need to upload scanned copies of the relevant documents highlighted above. Ensure that these documents should be scanned and uploaded as PDF files.
  • Go to the online payment page and pick your desired currency i.e Naira or Dollars. After you are done with the payment, click on submit. You can choose to pay with either your naira or debit card.
  • On the payment page, fill in your credentials and log in. Click pay and input your card information and confirm payment.
  • Ensure you print your receipt after making the payment.
  • If you choose to pay through your bank, select your bank and click “Print Acknowledgement”. Afterwards, you would be given a slip which you would take to the bank to make the necessary payment.
  • If you stay outside Nigeria and you wish to make the payment in dollars, you would be directed to the payment page to make your payment in dollars.
  • After payment, you would be given a receipt and a unique ID number for your application. You must then verify it on the NIS website.
  • You should get a notarized copy of the guarantor’s form after you have printed it. Proceed to upload it and enter your application ID and reference number and submit.
  • Note that an interview would be scheduled to proceed with your application. You’d find the date of the interview on the Applicant details page.
  • Now visit the immigration office designated to you for your biometrics to be taken and to attend your interview. There, your fingerprints and photo would be taken. Ensure you go along with your receipt or acknowledgement slip as they would be needed for the interview.

After your application is complete you should take the following documents with you to the passport office:

  • Acknowledgement slip & payment receipt and two recent photographs
  • Copy of duly completed application form
  • Printed and signed application forms to the Passport office and
  • Photocopy of the Data page of the Nigerian standard Passport of your guarantor, their Driving License or a National Identity Card to verify their identity.

Nigerian International Passport Processing Time

There is no specific time for your passport to be processed after your online application and your biometrics have been taken. Depending on several factors, it may take weeks or months to process it. Hence, it is advisable to apply at least two months before the date you’d travel abroad.
